How to choose paint that has the lowest environmental impact?

Ecolabels and certifications increase awareness and reliably express the properties related to the product’s safety and environmental impact. Type 1 Ecolabelled products, according to the standard ISO 14024 criteria meet the requirements regarding their environmental impact throughout their life cycle, from raw material acquisition and production to use and disposal.

One of the best-known certifications in Finland is the Nordic Swan Ecolabel. The Nordic Swan Ecolabel has offices in all the Nordic countries and, hence, the product criteria are the same in all these five countries.

Paints labelled with the Nordic Swan Ecolabel, have the least impact on the environment. For this reason, the ecolabel indicates that the product fulfils strict environmental, safety, and quality requirements. Currently, 19 Teknos consumer products carry the label, and the aim is to get more products certified in the future. By means of third-party certifications, Teknos strives to strengthen consumers’ product awareness and give a clearer indication of the environmental properties of its products.

The label criteria of third-party certifications are revised every 3–5 years in accordance with new environmental information, technological developments, and the market situation. Teknos is committed to investing in the development of its operations and products to maintain these labels. Read more about the ecolabel application process.

How can I check the environmental effects of the paint’s raw materials?

In addition to ecolabels, Environmental Product Declarations (EDPs) are a voluntary and standardized way to reliably present essential, verified, and comparable information about the environmental effects in the product life cycle. Teknos has started publishing Environmental Product Declarations (EDPs) for a range of its products.
